Technical Information Split Dodging: Split Dodging, Which is similar to Split Printing, where areas of a print are exposed with more or less contrast than the base exposure. Split dodging is a variation on this technique and is accomplished by placing a piece of high 5+ or low 00 Ilford filter stock on the end of a dodging tool. By printing through the filter one can lighten and effect contrast at the same time. By combining split dodging with burning at a higher or lower contrast, a greater level of control can be achieved. Split dodging will help to minimize the likelihood of losing contrast, and creating a glow associated with over dodging. In my printing, I find that larger prints, such as 16x20 with large areas of print surface to cover, are best served with larger tools, and that small prints need smaller tools. Therefore a wide range of sizes and shapes of both opaque and split dodging tools are beneficial. Each individual print maker will have his or her personal preferences in determining what works best. In an effort to support traditional silver based black and white photography I am now offering custom made dodging tools in both the standard opaque and filter based split dodging, made with high 5+ or low 00 Ilford contrast filter stock. When placing an order for custom dodging tools simply draw the size and shape of tool you would like on a piece of paper and include it with your payment. The transparent filter stock is expensive and some-what floppy and there are physical limitations to the size of a tool I can make. A laminated piece of card stock for the opaque paddle end is spray-painted black to reduce the reflected light when using the dodging tool at an angle. Small tools have a stiff but very fine wire extension attached to the end of the main shaft with the painted paddle attached to it. This reduces the possibility of making a shadow line from the tool when working on small areas. Split dodging tools have two stiff but very fine wires attached to the end of the main shaft, which support each side of the filter stock. |
