Michael Harris portrait

As the young son of a university professor of ornithology, my summers were spent traveling throughout the National Parks of the west and to many foreign lands in my fathers never- ending quest for the next new bird. These adventures gave me the opportunity to develop my interest in photography.

In 1977 I took a workshop in Yosemite with Ansel Adams, Morley Baer, Yousuf Karsh, among others. Being associated with such great photographers became a turning point, giving me the confidence to use photography as a tool to explore and develop my own intimate way of seeing the world. I have continued to work in black and white using large format 4x5 and 6x9 films. My prints are silver gelatin, selenium toned and processed in a wet darkroom. I remain dedicated to the continuation of traditional black and white photography and print making.

I have exhibited extensively throughout the Northern California Coastal area including Pearl Lounge, West Haven Center for the Arts, and group shows at Piante Gallery, Cody-Pettit Gallery and North Coast Gallery. My photography earned a Best of Show award and 1st and 2nd places in the Images of Water exhibition and my work was accepted in the Northwest Eye Photography Competition and published in Photographer’s Form Magazine.

Artist's Statement

For me, photographs have the most meaning when they are expressions of the union between a photographers' intuitive emotional response and the subject. This allows the image to be more about what is behind the camera than the scene in front of the photographer.

My hope as a photographer is that the viewer can grow along with me as I endeavor to explore what is universal in all things.
